The austenitic Stainless Steel 310 Grade has a modest carbon content. About 25% chromium and 20% nickel are the main alloying components utilised in stainless steel 310 fasteners. The combination of these two elements in the fastener gives them a high level of corrosion and oxidation resistance.

The UNS S31000 Fasteners typically resist corrosion and stress cracking in environments that contain reducing sulphur or hydrogen sulfide. These fasteners are frequently found in environments that are moderately carburising, such as those found in petrochemical industries. In high temperature applications like furnace parts and heat treatment equipment, 310 SS Fasteners are used. Stainless steel of the 310 grade can withstand continuous service temperatures of 1150°C and intermittent service temperatures of 1035°C.
The maximum carbon percentage of 310 Grade Stainless Steel is typically around 0.25%, but a low carbon variation, also known as Grade 310S, that is readily available on the market has a maximum carbon content of roughly 0.08%. The reduced carbon content of alloy 310S fasteners makes them easier to produce than their alloy counterparts. The astm a479 310s' alloy provides good resistance to embrittlement and sensitization in use.
Cold working can be used to harden the 310 Stainless Steel Fasteners, however it is rarely done. Cryogenic components, furnace equipment such as burners, doors, fans, and piping, ore processing and steel plants, smelter and steel melting equipment, continuous casting equipment, sintering & cement plants for instruments such as burners, burner shields,, wind boxes, feeding and discharging systems, and foaming systems are all applications for the 310 stainless steel fasteners.
