Applications requiring high tensile strength in temperature ranges from cryogenic up to an elevated temperature of about 1400°F are well suited for AMS 5662 Inconel 718 Black Bar. The ASTM B637 Bar not only has excellent tensile strength, but also good impact strength.

Either the aged condition or the annealed condition of Inconel 718 Rod can be used for welding. It is possible to weld aged Inconel 718 grade alloy, but doing so will result in the development of a softened heat-affected zone.

Using a furnace, Inconel 718 Hex Bars can be hot-worked at a maximum temperature of 2050°F. If the service temperature is below 1100°F, hot-cold working Inconel 718 Square Bar at a temperature range of 1700°F–1850°F will increase the forging's strength. It is simple to machine Inconel 718 Flat Bar in either the annealed or aged condition. While cutting Inconel 718 Flat Bar in an annealed condition will give the alloy a slightly longer tool life, cutting the alloy in an age-hardened condition will give better chip action and produce a better finish.
