If the stainless steel grade has a high pitting resistance number, it means that it has a high resistance to localised corrosion like pitting. Due to its greater strength compared to other traditional austenitic stainless steel grades, the stainless steel is regarded as a very high end grade. The 6mo UNS S31254 Bar can be welded well.
Similar to typical austenitic stainless steel grades, alloy 254 SMO Bar primarily consists of 19.5% to 20.5% chromium, 17.5% to 18.5% nickel, and 6% to 6.5% molybdenum. The ASTM A479 UNS S31254, however, differs from conventional austenitic stainless steel grades in that it includes between 0.18% and 0.22% nitrogen. The ultra austenitic 1.4547 Round Bar's chemical composition has particular amounts of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen that enable the SMO 254 Welding Rod to combine impact toughness resistance to corrosion cracking with pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. As a result, the 254 SMO Rod has strength that is almost twice as high as 300 series stainless steels.

Due to the presence of molybdenum, the UNS S31254 or SMO 254 Round Bar is frequently known to as a "6% Moly" grade. The 254 SMO Round Bar can endure high temperatures while retaining its high strength in unstable circumstances. This grade works well in a variety of settings, including chemical conditions and the desulfurization of flue gases. Chemical processing equipment, Flue gas desulfurization scrubbers, Desalination equipment, Seawater handling equipment, Food processing equipment, Heat exchangers, Hydrometallurgy, Pulp mill bleach systems, Tall oil distillation columns and equipment, and Oil and gas production equipment are some other applications for the 6mo UNS S31254 Bar.
