The stainless steel nylock nut's plastic or nylon insert is located at the end of the fastener. This nylon insert's inner diameter, or ID, is a little smaller than the screw's main or larger diameter. The stainless steel Nylock wing nuts' insert experiences elastic deformation over time. This is due to the screw's threads not having threads turned into them. By creating friction against the screw while being compressed radially, the nylon insert locks the 3/8 stainless steel Nyloc nuts.
The inability to use stainless steel nylock wing nuts with various chemicals and at high temperatures is one of their drawbacks. The nylon insert, which is thermoplastic by nature, can get deformed when using these nuts at high temperatures.
